Mathematics (07-08)

Progressive order of Math classes

Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus
After Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 may be taken at the same time

Requirements:
Mac-Hi Diploma – 3 years of math including Geometry
Honors Diploma – 3 years of math including Algebra 2

If a Math class is repeated it will be recorded as an elective credit unless the math class repeated was failed the first time taken.
PRE-ALGEBRA:  This course reviews basic arithmetic with fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, percents and signed numbers. It continues with these concepts and introduces variables, solving equations for one unknown variable, graphing lines and inequalities, probability and statistics, and plane geometry.

ALGEBRA 1:  This course reviews basic arithmetic with rational numbers, as well as expands on the algebraic concepts of variables, solving equations for 1 unknown variable, graphing lines and inequalities, linear and quadratic equations, solving systems of equations, combining polynomials and working powers, rational expressions, and radical expressions with numbers or variables. Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra

GEOMETRY:  This course covers subjects including inductive reasoning, geometric definitions, constructing geometric objects, relationships between lines and angles, triangle and polygon properties, circles, area of geometric shapes, Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, volume of three dimensional shapes, similarity, trigonometry, and geometric proofs. This course is designed to lay a base for understanding geometric shapes that will be needed to successfully complete advanced mathematics courses (Advanced Algebra and Analysis). Prerequisite: Algebra 1

ALGEBRA 1.5: This course is designed for students who have passed Algebra 1 an Geometry, but did not meet the requirements for Algebra 2. This course reviews Algebra 1 topics with the main focus on simplifying expressions, solving equations and graphing. Topics include sets of numbers, radical and rational expressions, linear and quadratic equations, matrices and systems of equations. After completing this course with a B or higher, students will have the option to take Algebra 2.  Prerequisite: Students may take this class with the instructor Approval, but only after completing Algebra 1 and Geometry.

ALGEBRA 2:  This course reviews Algebra 1 topics and expands on them to include sets of numbers, absolute value functions, quadratic functions, matrices, determinants, roots, imaginary and complex numbers, rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, conics, and trigonometry. Prerequisite: C or higher in Algebra 1 and Geometry or Instructor approval.

PRE-CALCULUS:  This course reviews Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry 1-2.   This course expands on them to include derivatives, vectors and parametric equations, polar coordinates, limits and integration techniques. Prerequisite: C or higher in Algebra 2 or Instructor approval.  Required materials: Graphing calculator (TI preferred)

CALCULUS: This course is a one-year course designed to provide academically talented students with a background in mathematics, which will prepare him/her for mathematics, and science courses at the college level. The course includes an intensive review of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. The course focuses on a study of limits, differentiation, and integration. Prerequisite: Instructor approval required.
