My name is Emily Powell and I am happy to be experiencing my third year of teaching here at Mac-Hi. I teach three classes which include sophomore English II, American Literature, and Advanced Placement Composition. I attended Eastern Oregon University for both my undergraduate and graduate careers, and I currently live in Pendleton, Oregon.

Sophomore English II

Sophomore English II is a survey of world literature, focusing on cultivating skills for reading and writing. Because sophomore year is a CIM year, we focus on cultivating writing skills, mastering the craft of essay-writing in all modes, speaking in public focums, and improving reading skills. My hope is that all of my students will do well on their worksamples and state assessments during this academic year.

American Literature

American Literature is designed for juniors and offers a chronological overview of novels, plays, poetry, and short stories written by American authors. Students also learn a lot about American history as it ties in with certain texts that we read.

 

Advanced Placement Composition

Advanced Placement Composition is a course designed for college-bound seniors. These stduents will prepare to take and pass the AP composition course in the spring; passing students will then receive college-level English credit. Students taking this course will read a variety of literature selected from the college-bound reading list. They will also create a literary-based website highlighting the works of a classic novelist.

National Honor Society

I am also embarking upon my third year as the head advisor for Mac-Hi's National Honor Society. Working with this group of students is a pleasure and an honor.

I am happy to be a part of the Mac-Hi staff, and to be working with such great students and colleagues. I look forward to a great spring semester, as well as many exciting years to come!
