Science (07-08)

Prerequisite Classes Must Have Been Passed

FRESHMAN SCIENCE:  All freshmen are required to take 9th Grade Science.  The course is designed to prepare students for the CIM.  The course is divided into four units with comprehensive study of physics, earth science, chemistry and biology.

BIOLOGY:  This course covers the study of life and deals with cellular biology, evolution, and microorganisms.   It incorporates microscopic technique and genetic calculations, to give the student a better understanding of the living world.  Prerequisite:  Open only to 10, 11, 12.

CHEMISTRY:  Students will investigate chemical reactions and be guided in learning the skills and using the tools of science.  They will also further their knowledge of chemical reactions.  A considerable amount of time will be spent in the laboratory.  Prerequisites:  Algebra I or above.   Class open only to 10, 11, 12.

PHYSICS:  The course deals with the physical behavior of matter.  The main topics are motion, heat energy, nuclear use, wave transfer of energy, optics, gravity, electricity, Newton's Laws and Einstein's theory of special relativity.  Prerequisite:  Algebra I or above. Class open only to 10, 11, 12.

EARTH SYSTEMS:  This course is a study of the concepts and interactions of four spheres of Earth (water, life, land and air) with special applications to the Pacific Northwest region.  Students will analyze current issues for each sphere, as well as participate in various lab investigations and a water quality study.

METEOROLOGY:  This course is a lab-based study of the physical aspects of oceans and the study of Earth's weather systems.

ASTRONOMY:  This course is an in-depth lab-oriented study of our universe.  Topics include Archaoastronomy, star composition and evolution, galaxy formation, universe expansion and Astrobiology.

LAB ASSISTANT:  Duties will include preparing Labs for the Science Dept.  This is a graded course.

ZOOLOGY:  Zoology is the study of animals.  This is a dissection-based class in which we will work through the animal kingdom.  Prerequisite:  Biology, grades 10, 11, 12 only.

BOTANY:  Botany is the study of plants.  This is a lab-based investigation into the plant kingdom where we will use the new greenhouse as our classroom.  Prerequisite:  1st Semester Biology; open to 10, 11, 12 only.
